Mountain huts & how to book them
The hut nights are the heart of the Haute Route — and in July they sell out weeks to months ahead. Booking details below are verified against each hut’s official terms and the Swiss Alpine Club rules.
How Swiss hut booking works
SAC-affiliated huts are booked on hut-reservation.org, the joint portal of the Swiss, Austrian, German, and South Tyrol alpine clubs (it replaced alpsonline.org). A free user account is required — anonymous bookings no longer exist. No money is taken when you book; if a hut requires a card guarantee, a 3D-Secure card is verified with a ~EUR 1 authorization that is immediately reversed and only charged on late cancellation or no-show.
Cancellation: Under the SAC general terms, changes and cancellations are free until 18:00 two days before the booked night; after that the hut may charge up to the full value of the unused services. Wardens may also ask for a deposit — if it isn't paid by the agreed date the reservation lapses.
Membership discounts: SAC members and members of reciprocal alpine clubs (UIAA reciprocity) get discounted overnight rates, but only on presentation of a valid membership card — these days usually the digital card in the SAC app. Discounts vary per hut; some private huts offer none.
Note: only some Haute Route huts use the SAC portal — most run their own booking systems with their own rules. Per-hut details below.
